“The Boss Baby” is a prime example of something that should have been one of those short films that Pixar shows before one of their features. The movie starts out with a good premise, A family gets a new baby, and the baby takes over effectively becoming the boss of the family and how the baby requires so much attention that the elder child can feel neglected. But, this does not last very long, and it quickly turns into a conspiracy about using puppies to keep people from having babies, from that point on, the movie falls flat.
“The Boss Baby” had a few good jokes, but was comedically uninspired. Not even Alec Baldwin is doing a version his Jack Donaghy character from “30 Rock” can save this movie. The problem with the movie is that the gags just do not work. On the one hand, this is a movie that wants to the kind of animated movie that bridges audience demographics by appealing to both children and adults. As far as adults are concerned, this movie does not work, too many juvenile gags. But on that proverbial other hand, “The Boss Baby” was clearly made for children, specifically younger children. I believe that there is a lot in “The Boss Baby” that kids can get out of it, especially if they recently acquired a new sibling.
“The Boss Baby” was a good 20-minute short stretched too thin when expanded into a feature. The kids will enjoy it; the adults will not.
